Keep reading to learn more about Jessica and what keeps her motivated.
Jessica: I joined Furey four years ago as a Senior Associate, supporting month-end close and managing operational tasks like AP, AR, and audit requests across a wide range of industries. Two years in, I was promoted to Accounting Manager and built a team of six, focusing on delivering strong results for our clients and developing my people management skills.
I recently stepped into the role of Director of Accounting, where I help to oversee the accounting department. I’m excited to work on broader initiatives like resource planning and process improvements that ultimately enhance how we support our clients.
Jessica: Most days include a mix of client and team questions, along with meetings with the Accounting team. As I’m transitioning into my new role, I’m still managing several accounts which includes reviewing high-risk areas and ensuring the month-end close is accurate and timely. I also conduct interviews as we grow our team, collaborate on accounting content, and work closely with the greater accounting team to ensure we’re set up for success.
Jessica: It’s more than just accounting. I’ve been a researcher for clients navigating R&D capitalization, a writer helping craft investor disclosures, an auditor prepping teams for their first audits, a designer building dashboards based on a client's vision, and a mentor supporting team growth. Using my strengths outside of traditional accounting responsibilities keeps the work both interesting and challenging.
Jessica: I wish I had some cutting edge technology to share but my ride or die is OneNote. I love how easy it is to search and revisit past conversations. I also try not to procrastinate. If something takes 30 minutes or less, I aim to knock it out that week. If I need to remember something for next month-end, I write it down right away where I know I’ll see it. A little effort today goes a long way later.
Jessica: We offer truly hands-on support, which helps us understand our clients’ businesses on a deeper level and build strong working relationships. I’m also constantly impressed by the technology our TechOps team brings to the table. Our reconciliation tools are powerful, and clients notice.
Jessica: I tend to be very reflective and overanalyze my decisions. Lately I’ve learned that while reflection is important, so is having confidence in your experience and instincts. They’re what brought you to the decision in the first place.
Jessica: My standing desk! I try to stand during the first part of the day or on important calls because it helps me stay focused and energized.
Jessica: It depends on what I need. If I’m feeling like I need to disconnect my mind, a good book does the trick. If I need to physically recharge, I like yoga, pilates or just sweating it out at the gym. If I need to absolutely level my brain, I like going for a hike or getting out into nature. It’s hard for your worries to feel substantial when you’re looking up at mountain tops.
Jessica: I love to cook! Every Sunday I put together a menu for the upcoming week and grocery shop for what we need (I also love grocery shopping). We recently got a new grill/smoker and it’s been fun discovering new recipes.
Jessica’s story is a great example of the kind of culture we're building at Furey. We aim to create an environment where team members can grow, both in their careers and in their interests outside of work.
